Online Short Courses from Central Institute for the Deaf (CID)- Building Conversational Skills for Preschool Children

Outreach Services, VSDB has purchased access to four online short courses (30 - 60 minutes each), and is making them available to professionals in Virginia who want to learn more about working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The courses were developed at the Central Institute for the Deaf (CID). Those who register before the given deadline will be sent a code that will allow access for one month (March 20-April 19, 2017) to take that course at their convenience, 24/7. At the end of that course, each participant must complete an assessment, a course evaluation, and a questionnaire, and will then receive ASHA or LSLS CEUs and a certificate of completion. People may take as many or few courses as they choose.

Course # 2 - Building Conversational Skills for Preschool Students - outlines how conversational skills develop and how they can be improved in preschoolers.  It presents specific developmental goals and ways to achieve them. Examples are presented using classroom video. (~30 min) and

Course # 3 -Building Conversational Skills for School-Aged Students - outlines how conversational skills develop and how they can be improved in older children.  It presents specific developmental goals and ways to achieve them (ex. - teach students to use pragmatic language and repair strategies when conversations break down). (~30 minutes)

Target Audience: 

Educators (including teachers, related service providers, instructional assistants, and special education directors) who work with children who are deaf or hard of hearing, ages 3-5 and 6-12, with a goal of developing listening and spoken language skills.
