Best Practices for Assessment of Young Children: Three-Part Webinar Series
The Virginia Department of Education’s Office of Early Childhood in collaboration with the Office of Special Education Instructional Services, is pleased to offer a three-part webinar series titled Best Practices for Assessment of Young Children. The purpose is to deliver targeted technical assistance to school division leaders who are engaged in determining eligibility for special education and related services for children ages two through five. The webinars will be delivered by Marie Ireland, Eligibility and Speech Language Impairment Specialist.
When a child under the age of five is evaluated to determine eligibility for special education and related services, it is critical for teams to use appropriate assessment practices to identify the child's abilities and educational needs. Care must be taken to carefully select informal and formal strategies that will help determine the presence of a disability that warrants special education and related services and to rule out the effect of linguistic and cultural differences as well as a lack of exposure to learning opportunities. Teams will need to gather data over several designated periods of time and in different contexts using both authentic and dynamic assessment practices. During the three webinars, participants will learn about these best practices in assessing young children to ensure informed decisions are made regarding eligibility for special education and related services.
